Cosplaying isn’t hard! Chibi’s list of simple cosplays

So my friends and I are working on a group Eevee cosplay. It will be really cute when we are finished–but once we start sewing all of those ears and tails, things might get pretty complicated!!

It wasn’t always that hard to cosplay though! My friends and I threw together a very simple cosplay for Comic-Con a while ago. We cosplayed the Nerima Daikon Brothers, a musical anime about brothers Hideki and Ichiro and their cousin Mako.

This is our cosplay for Chicago’s Comic-Con 2010 (from left to right: Me as Ichiro, Malik as Hideki, and Chelsea as Mako.

Admittedly, we overlooked Hideki’s green scarf and Malik refused to wear a wig, so it still isn’t a great cosplay. But!! It’s a great example of something easy and quick!

  • We all went to the costume store and bought the same top hats and ties, but really any black top hat and tie will do.
  • While at the costume store, we couldn’t find a pink wig for Mako, so instead we bought a medium length, curly blonde wig and a couple cans of neon pink hair spray. The end result wasn’t bad, as you can see above!
  • Then we went to the thrift store for some simple black pants for myself and Malik, and a small pencil skirt for Chelsea.
  • While at the thrift store, we also found some black dress jackets
  • and the red, blue, and yellow button down shirts.
  • Then we dug through our closets and found some spiffy black shoes (boots for Mako) and thigh-high fishnets for Chelsea.
  • Finally, we each picked out an inexpensive pair of black sunglasses, Chelsea picked out especially big sunglasses for Mako.

And we’re done!!

So now, here are some other cosplays that would be simple if you are pressed for time like we were or just not confident enough in your sewing skills to try making a costume:

Guys:

Death Note – L

Popular among simple cosplays, is the character L from Death Note.

  • Slightly long and messy straight black hair.
  • Black eyeliner all around the eyes.
  • Long sleeve white shirt
  • Blue jeans
  • No shoes
  • It helps to keep a bent over, slouched shoulders posture and also to bite your thumb. It makes the character more recognizable.

Soul Eater – Spirit

Funimation's Soul Eater

Soul Eater is  difficult show to find simple cosplays, since everyone has costumes and weapons. Spirit, also called Death Scythe, has very straight forward outfit. Although many who cosplay him also make the blades for the back as well, we’ll just focus on the simple part of this costume.

  • Medium-length red hair
  • Black suit jacket and pants
  • Green button down shirt (Spirit also has two small crosses sewn to the corners of his shirt collar)
  • Skinny black tie with a small strip of black sewn perpindicular to the middle
  • Black belt with square silver buckle

Cowboy Bebop – Spike

An older, but still highly popular anime is Cowboy Bebop, who’s protagonist, Spike, is very easy to cosplay.

  • A fluffy mess of dark brown hair
  • Dark blue suite (jacket and pants) with the cuffs of the jacket rolled up to just below the elbows
  • Thin black tie
  • Yellow button down shirt
  • Black shoes
  • Having a cigarette helps.

Girls:

Cowboy Bebop – Edward

Cowboy Bebop

Popular for the girls from Cowboy Bebop is the small eccentric character, Ed.

  • Messy short red hair or wig
  • Short baggy white shirt (Ed’s comes down to the bottom of her ribcage, above the belly button)
  • Tight black shorts (like bicycle shorts maybe? or a pair of yoga shorts?) comes to just below mid-thigh
  • No shoes
  • Goggles (If you want to get more specific, Ed’s are dark grey metal with green tinted lenses and a dark brown strap)

Elfen Lied – Lucy

The main character of Elfen Lied, Lucy, has numerous great cosplays, but this one is really easy!

  • Short pink wig (comes just below the chin)
  • Small white or off-white kitty ears
  • Dark red ribbon tied around the neck in a bow
  • Light pink t-shirt w/ sleeves above elbow
  • Dark grey or black jumper dress (short, comes above mid-thigh)
  • Black and grey striped thigh-high socks (the feet are cut so that the socks only cover the heel of the foot)
  • Red heels

Pokémon – Misty

Yet another throwback, Misty from Pokémon is a popular choice among cosplayers.

Nintendo's Pokémon

  • Orange hair or wig, pulled into a single ponytail on the left side (Misty wears a purple ponytail holder).
  • Yellow shirt, short – comes just above the belly button
  • Short blue jean shorts (most girls don’t buy them this way, but Misty actually wears high-rise shorts so they come just below her belly button)
  • Red suspenders
  • Red sneakers (if you so desire, Misty also has yellow zig-zags on her shoes, but most girls just go with red converses because they look very similar.

Blood+ – Saya

Blood+ is great for cosplays, but the most simple and recognizable one would be the main character Saya in the outfit she wears for the second half of the show.

Production I.G.'s Blood+

  • Short black hair
  • If you want to get really into it, get some red contacts
  • Medium length dark maroon/purple trench coat (comes above her knees)
  • A white or off-white slip or dress that is just barely longer than the coat
  • Dark boots (if you can they should also be dark maroon/purple)
  • If you can, find/make a prop samurai sword — hers has a red handle and a red jewl at the bottom of the blade.
